The test launch of virtual gifts by Facebook, the virtual society on the net, which is probably to coincide with the coming Valentine's day. The Internet now really enters our life, which brings virtual effect, which you can even find virtual lovers that gradually becomes real one day! Yeah, there were many cases like this before. Those hooked up with online chatting, emailing, collaborating via forum, blogs finally will end up with a real relationship.

The virtual gift at FaceBook now is given as free ~~right now~~ at its testing period. It will charge $1 per gift later. How does this virtual gift work? If you are having hard time to access your blog hosted overseas, it'd be hard to tell if it's the country's outgoing Internet backbone or any International backbone is down or your webserver is having problem. (E.g the recent Taiwan's earthquake demaged some submarine cables and causing slow connection over the Asia region and even some websites unaccessible)

I have my blog hosted in the States. My newly setup tech blog, TechChee.com, the blog that I've been telling myself that I wanna make it good and a success. When I found it's hard to access, the first thing in my mind is to lodge a report/ticket to the hosting company's support center, to complain about the server is down. Well, if you simply lodge a report like this, you will probably hit the wall and get kicked back by the support, if the website is found up and running and accessible from thier side.

How do you find out by yourself first to ensure that your web server is running properly before lodging a report ? There are quite a number of the online tools out there, which allow you to trace if the hosting company network routing is up and thier web server is in good shape.

CentralOps.net offers handful of FREE online tools, which you can do a traceroute to check for the network or and HTTP query to check if your webserver is up. I'm currently unable to access my blog TechChee.com, but I can at least pacify myself that my blog is still up and running, as I managed to get a response of status code 200, when I queried using CentralOps's HTTP query tool.

Another multi-million venture by Alex Tew, who is gonna launch his multi-millions idea soon. This time, he is going to launch a site called, www.pixelotto.com , which he is targeting for USD$2 per pixel. Alex has been annoucing now over the Internet that he is going to give away USD$1 million for the prize for those who managed to click the right pixel ads.

Just a little bit of history about Alex Tew, the young British entrepreneur, who managed to raise USD$1 million for paying back all his student loan by launching a pixel ads website, www.milliondollarhomepage.com. It took him about 5 months plus only to have sold out all the pixel ads on his website and he even auctioned the last 1000 pixels on eBay, which was then lastly grabbed by www.milliondollarweightloss.com for a price of USD$30K.

The new venture by Alex, has triggered some buzz over the net and being debated over several hot forums and blog sites during its prelaunch, such as TechCrunch and SitePoint. A post by Techcrunch's Natali Del Conte , who claimed that Alex's idea was stupid as it is just a repeat of his first one. Natali even claimed that she was gonna eat her word, if Alex could succeed for the second time. The post by Natali so far has gathered more than 100 comments, which could be one of the hottest posts on TechCrunch!

Since Alex is giving away USD$1 million for the prize, I bet that he will succeed, as it would trigger huge traffic and people out there will be passionately waiting for its launch and trying to click the right ads for winnng the $1 million. It's really interesting to know that how Alex is going to give the one who clicks the right ads the 1 million prize. There would be many out there just sit in front of thier PC and keep on trying to click the ads. Some programmers even claimed that they could simply program a BOT, which will click all the ads automatically.

To avoid clicking fraud, Alex would need to put a lot of effort on his website, such as offering membership account, and only registered members can click the ads and there is a need for putting anti-spam and anti-bot feature for the website to prevent those software robots from clicking the right ads!

Boo hoo! Boo maybe back in year 2007?

Still remember Boo.com? It was quite a buzz in Europe in 1999. I have no good memory, I was a bit too late and didn't manage to catch up and have a feel on how Boo.com website was. I only happened to find out when a friend of mine passed me a book titled "Boo Hoo". I guess this book is now still chucked in my old bookshelf at home.

Well, just to refresh my memory, Boo was a website starting with a buzz and received lots of press in Europe of wanting to sell branded sportwear online before it collapsed. Boo was even equiped with online simulated figure, which allows buyers to add on sportwear items, such as shirt, shoes pants to the figure for a try and feel! This was really a very new idea at that time, I would consider it's almost one of the hot web 2.0 features of today, i.e animated figure on the web, but unfortunately, Boo financially could NOT sustain through the expenses on technology, such as bandwidth and software development, which was really expensive during its time and finally it collapsed. It almost burnt through $120 millions for its six months of operation! If you now take a look of the Boo.com, it's got no content but only the homepage, but with a message telling that a new website on Boo is coming soon in 2006 but 2006 is almost ending soon. According to a post on Techcrunch, Boo maybe back in year 2007, lets keep an eye on what Boo will offer us in year 2007!

What is the development of the Internet, it's really a virtual space that keeps on expanding. According to a Netcraft's survey there are more than 100 millions of websites out there and still on counting.... Well, if you are hooked up and keep yourself following up with some tech news, there have been a lots of talks about web 2.0 , i.e the current hot issue, so-called a standard of the web.

When the time Yahoo and Lycos were in dominance of the web, it was the era of web 1.0. But now, it belongs to web 2.0, with the dominance of Google, and other newly upcoming web 2.0 websites, such as Flickr, YouTube, Multiply etc (Although some of these have been acquired by Yahoo! or Google or MSN etc).

Web 2.0, put it in short is the web standard having more emphasize on the users or the benefits to the users. Users will get thier own spaces, greater usability and sharing features on the web! The spaces here refer to blogging space, tagging (another way of bookmarking, categorizing web content in your own way), general storage spaces for videos, audios, documents (word processor doc, spreadsheet etc.).

Here is a summary of spaces,sharing features and greater web usability that you can have over the Internet !

Blog
The famous term that comes from "web log", which you can write your journal or diary on a web space, such as this blog. There are lots of free service providers out there, such as this blog, live space on MSN, besides you can easily get the famous ones such as this BlogSpot space by Google or LiveJournal.

The above are service providers that allow you to have your "nick" as a sub-domain under thier domain, e.g ketyung.spaces.live.com . Other than that you wanna pay a little bit of money or if you are a techchies, and you know setting up of a web space, which you can get WordPress, which is free and host your own blog with your own preferred domain name.
Video/Audio/Picture spaces The web even now is getting into "multimedia-loaded", i.e full of pictures, audio and videos. Even for users now you can quite a hand-full of service providers out there for you to create your multimedia contents such as YouTube, Multiply, Vox

General documents spaces Here are the spaces where you can create,store and share your general documents such as word, spreadsheet. The companies that are on the race for providing such a kind of services are Writely (which is now Google docs/spreadsheet), Zoho (ZohoWriter, ZohoSheet & ZohoShow for word processor, spreadsheet and presentation such as powerpoint), BoxNet (Online file storage for all sorts of files such as documents & multimedia contents) and others such as EditGrid, IRows are in the spreadsheet categories

Tagging
What about tagging? Tagging is by means of adding any website URL to a common space by associating the URL with tags that you like! It's like a common bookmark space, which you can add your own "word" for the tag or category and you can also share it to your friends and family. Most web portal nowadays come with tagging feature, which you will see a big tag cloud, that comes with words in different font sizes, more popular tags having bigger font size! The most popular common tagging space is del.icio.us, a very special domain name with the word delicious, basically it's a .US domain name. Some other portals such as blogger's search and ping services like Technorati, classifieds spaces also provide tag clouds!

Greater Usability
Other than spaces & sharing features, web 2.0 also puts emphasize on better usability of web interface i.e enhancing usability and friendliness, this is where AJAX web comes in, the hot term for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML among the web developers/programmers.

What about this term "AJAX", what can it do ? It's a programming term, the final effect to the web, it brings greater usability of a website. In short, AJAX is the technique adopted for building websites that minimize "post back".

If you have been a web surfer for quite some time, you would have noticed that navigating thru a website require many mouse clicks and the web pages will need to be sent to and fro the web server. Especially when filling up a form when signing up for an account on a web portal, once you have fully entered all your particulars and ready to submit it, after the submission, the page will come back giving you some errors, possibly claiming that a duplicated username or email, you will need then to change the email/username and submit again. What would happen if there is another error, e.g you forgot keying in your password? There would be another post-back! This normally gives some frustration to the users, which they will claim the Internet is so slow! As the web pages will need to travel to fro back to the web server which is far away, e.g you are accessing a website in US!

The use of AJAX in developing web will minimize "post back". In short AJAX is a web technique by means of using JavaScript and XML, which verification such as above-mentioned process can be done without "post back", i.e the user will be prompted on the spot once there is a duplication of email or username before they submit the form (The mechanism behind is the web page uses AJAX to send back data to the web server "quietly" for verification and prompt the user if there is a duplication). Besides , AJAX is great , of course with some combination of programming technique such as DHTML (Dynamic HTML). The above-mentioned spreadsheet or docs creator, such as Zoho, EditGrid are done using AJAX+DHTML or flash for better usability, which will be as good as your normal Windows desktop apps! New Ipod Shuffle, smallest digital music player, will be out tomorrow !

What is the size of the smallest version of Apple's Ipod Shuffle ? It's only 1.62-inches long, just about the size of a matchbox ! The smallest digital music player by Apple, it's gonna be out in the market tomorrow (3rd/Nov/06). But this little matchbox-sized music player can hold up to 240 songs. The down side is it does NOT have a display to show what it's playing! I guess it will take another couple more years or earlier for computer chips to get even much tinier, then a matchbox-sized music player will also have a nice LCD display on it ?

This new version of Shuffle is around half the size of the original that was introduced in January, last year (2005). It weighs 14 grams only, includes 1-gigabyte of storage, has a built-in clip for portability, with the battery that can last for around 12 hours! Vice president of Apple, Greg Joswiak claims that this Shuffle is the most wearable because of its ultra compact design and built-in clip.

Some other features of the small Shuffle are, you can have continous mix of favorite songs, have songs playing in random order or simply flip a switch to listen to songs in a particular order. The small Shuffle can be connected to a Mac or PC with included dock and iTunes' AutoFill feature that automatically syncs the correct number of songs from a user's music library.

Meanwhile, it is priced at USD$79, comes with earbud phones (But according to this blog here, the first batch that has already reached the hands of those who hurried to order it, the earbud is the old type, which is NOT the new improved earbuds presented by Steve Job on 12th/Sept! Open source such as Linux is NO more secure? I do agree that open source software, the Linux platform has been more secure and stable than the Windows platform. In my experience when handling servers on both the Windows and Linux platforms, I prefer Linux, as the fundamental is I do NOT have to worry about worm attack and virus infection!

Being a Linux user, I guess now is the time to be more alerted with the security of this platform. As told by well-known Linux developer of UK, Alan Cox, who now works at the RedHat for Linux kernel development, the Linux platform is the next target for hacking. According to Alan, when speaking to delegates at London's LinuxWorld conference on Wednesday, he emphasized that considerable sums of money were being spent in attempting to hack into open-source systems.

And he cautioned that many open-source projects were far from secure.

"There is a lot of money going into security, but the situation is worse, because there is a lot of money going into breaking security. People are being paid to work breaking down software systems," Cox, who is employed by Linux seller Red Hat, told delegates.

1. Google had registered a political action committee (PAC) with the US federal election commission.

2. Google has included 2006 election guide on Google Earth to help U.S. voters prepare for November's elections. Google Earth is free for download, it offers live newsfeeds on those candidates, as well as links to campaign finance information and somemore it directs you to voter registration information for your state.

3. Google employees have been involved with leftwing groups such as MoveOn.org

4. Google-bomb, a sophisticated one, carrying a double warhead containing manipulated search results and an AdWords campaign. It is targeted at the 70 Republican candidates running for Congress across the US. For example, the Google search engine, if you have a search for "bush", it would have come up with at least 5 out of the top 10 results having hyperlinks to websites that have negative write-up on the politician. Somemore, the Adwords might carry negative political AdWords campaigns, eventhough Google bans political advertisements.

Be smart and avoid being the victim of Phishing

What is phishing ? You have proibably heard of this term recently, especially those hooked up to Internet always.

Phishing is by far the most common method used for online fraud. Phishing involves sending out legitimate-looking emails that seem to come from a trustworthy website or institution. The most common examples seen today are those emails from a bank or payment handler such as PayPal etc.

Fraudsters normally would create a fake website, which looks like the homepage of a reputable company, e.g PayPal. Then they send out millions of emails to consumers, asking them to follow a link on the email to login to their account and update thier profile etc. Once the consumer responds and follows exactly what they have been told on the email, then thier identities will be stolen by fraudster for financial again. For example, if you are the victim and you have followed what you have been told on the email and login to the fake website, then your login information will be captured by the frausters, which they can then make use of your login information to get on to the real website and do what they want, such as transfer some fund from your account to thiers. The attached in the followings is a sample of the fake email, which claims is from PayPal.
As a consumer like us, to avoid being the victim of phishing, what can you do ? Well, be smart, at first you should check the mail header, most email clients allow you to do so, by viewing the full header. You would have found that the fake email does NOT originate from the reputable company, e.g the example above, the email is received from 93.Red-80-35-54.staticIP.rima-tde.net. A real email from PayPal should originate from a host with paypay.com domain, such as the followings

This is terrible for credit card users! According to New York Times, most of the RFID credit cards failed basic security test. Most credit card companies claim that data on credit cards are encrypted with 128-bit encryption technology. The Times has found that cardholder's name and other data are being transmitted in plain text only, i.e with NO encryption. Besides, the cards can be scanned with some fairly basic radio gear worth about $150. The data can be sniffed from the card through clothes, purses and wallets.

After a long wait. The Internet Explorer 7 is finally out, which is available for public download on Microsoft's website. I've just got my copy. If your OS is Windows XP, you need the service pack 2 to get it run! For those having Windows XP Pro 64 Edition or Windows Server 2003, you need the Service Pack 1!

Basically the new features added onto the IE7 are emphasized on the ease of use and security. A built-in anti-phishing filter, which installation of Activex objects are rejected by default! Besides, it also copies quite a number of popular features
from the open source Firefox such as search box and browser tabs for users to organize multiple web pages in a single window

Other than that, Microsoft is catching up with recent changes to internet standards such as CSS and HTML. The first thing I wanna try out is to test the few AJAX applications that I have with this new browser, I will keep you guys posted !

What's an MX record in DNS entry?

A staff of mine walked inside my room this morning and asked me "how to setup a mail server to receive email destined for my own domain?". This guy's got few unused PCs at home, therefore he is trying to setup a little Internet servers farm in his bedroom. He's hooked up to the Internet by Streamyx broadband service, the home user package, which does NOT allow him to have a fixed IP address, but he managed to set it up using the no-ip.com for a dynamic DNS service. This enables public to access for a sub-domain name at no-ip.com, which is then redirected to his broadband router. By the use of port forwarding on his broadband router, his webserver and mail server are publicaly accessible from the Internet. He' got so excited as he's got a little Internet server farm running in his bedroom, which he has web, mail services accessible from the Internet. Unfortunately, he failed to receive any email sent to this domain.

He's really keen on doing this, but he got stuck, frustrated as he seemed to get everything going all right, but he failed to receive email to this sub-domain of no-ip. (He sent several emails from all other email domains but not even received any single one).

Well, the crucial part here is the MX record, which he failed to setup an MX record in the DNS entry at no-ip. He does NOT understand what an MX record means. He's been googling around, what he has found is MX record is the "Mail Exchange Record", which he claimed no further information that he could find out of this !

MX Record, which represents the mail exchange record in DNS entry. This is what a mail /SMTP service needs to lookup when trying to deliver an email , which is destined for a domain For example, when someone is sending email through his/her local mail service to Yahoo.com, the local mail service will initiate a DNS lookup for the MX record of Yahoo.com. Once it's found the host of the MX of Yahoo, it will then communicate or establish an SMTP session with the MX of Yahoo, then handing over the email to the MX of Yahoo ...

Mozila Thunderbird, a great email client

I guess Mozila Thunderbird is the best email client software on earth. I personally do like the great features very much. Especially on the junk/spam filtering, it really does a great work. I was so frustrated with junks, when using Lotus notes or Outlook Express, as we do NOT have a centralized spam/junk filtering solution. I used to be getting over thousands of emails pouring into my mailbox if I had NOT checked my mail for more than 2 days and more than 90% of them were junks!!!! With that kind of frustration, I even missed out quite a number of important emails from customers or business partners etc. It's really frustrating when you need to have your eyes scanning through more than thousands of emails to pick up what you need. The message filter on Outlook or Lotus could help only a little !

With Thunderbird, I'm now totally out of junks, by using the great SPAM/junk filter that comes with it. Junk is recognized and self-learned by Thunderbird, after you have first marked a mail as a junk! Besides, Thunderbird also comes with other great features such as message filter, which allows you to setup filter for mails containing certain subject or sender to be routed into certain folders. Other features such as theme selection, address book, multiple account settings are also great !

If you hate junks as I do, you should opt Thunderbird as your email client software, as it's FREE, which is easily downloadable from http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

AJAX web application

It is a quiet night, I'm sitting in front of my computer, working on enhancing a software tool, which I have developed and used it for my major web-applications development project over years. It's a great tool, I personally feel, although it's NOT commercial, but it has helped me produce several enterprise-wide ajax-based web application over years and it eases all the taxing task involved in software development. It reduces more than 80% of the time needed to develope a web-based application. Its approach is almost like 4GL, which help me generate all the 3 tier of codes needed by mapping to a database table.

I have got an account from G oogle Adsense for almost two weeks but doing nothing with it, until 4 days ago, on 12th,Sept, I started to link up adsense with one of my websites, www.smartborneo.com, an online selling website for Nortn Borneo (Sabah) hand-made products. A few days later, I linked up adsense to AjaxApp.com and another online store, www.dunco.com.my.

After linking up with adsense with all these websites, I did not bother to check how much I had captured from adsense and I always thought it was making "zero" as all my sites are still new. To my surprise, the first time I logged in to adsense for checking my report, I got an average of USD0.73 a day. Up to now, the history of my adsense is 7 days, it has collected USD5. Although this is a very small amount, but it has given some excitement and some pushes to go further for it...

I have put in some AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) handling code, the shopping basket. When you choose "NOT to display shopping basket page after adding a new item" . It will do it in AJAX way. The shopping basket is stored in the PHP session.

After a week of holidays in Kuala Lumpur & Singapore, I'm now back to my work place, and started to maintain and update AjaxApp.com again. As I promised my students before, which I will keep on updating the site with more and more technical postings on PHP and other open source stuff.

The posting @AjaxApp.com for tonite, will be about PHP session handling & the object persistency across PHP session. I'm using shopping cart as an example to demo how the "Shopping Cart" object is persistent across the PHP sessions. Click here to find out.....

I have started few posts on AjaxApp.com. So far, I have NOT posted anything (e.g sample application and tutorial) about AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML). I will have it soon, especially on the Motionk J2EE AjaxApp Framework and its Rapid Builder, which I have worked on for the past few months. (Motionk AjaxApp Framework is basically a web application framework that made up of JSP/Servlets/JavaBean & AJAX, DHTML for the fast production of data-driven web app. Together with its Rapid Builder,you can rapidly deploy a data-driven AJAX-based web application within minutes without the need to handcode complex JavaScript & Java...)

My first few posting on AjaxApp.com forum were on PEAR DB_DataObject, when I was running a training @JPKN on PHP PEAR packages.

I was facinated with PEAR DB_DataObject, since it provides a good database table modeling feature. DB_DataObject allows the use of code generation or simple inheritance, which you can generate a PHP class that contains the methods 4 most repeatable task in data-driven application, which are : INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT and DELETE.

Well, at AjaxApp.com, I make use of the forum to post my technical tutorial & articles. Since I'was still running a training @JPKN, and I was giving training to my students on how to use the PHP PEAR DB_DataObject and the use of PHP on Microsoft SQL server. I started posting a few sample applications on AjaxApp.com about the usage of DB_DataObject and the configuration of FreeTDS for PHP to work with MSSQL.

AjaxApp.com was setup by the use of XOOPS, a PHP Object Oriented Based Portal Application, which is downloadable from www.xoops.org. Well, AjaxApp.com is only activated with 2 modules, which are the forum module and the links module. The links module is used here is for me to have link exchange with other website, in order to increase the search engine's position of AjaxApp.com. I have selected the theme, 7DANA-ROSE by 7dana.com.

Forum on AjaxApp.com is basically for the discussion of web-based application development using open source technology, which are PHP & J2EE. As the domain name tells, AjaxApp, the forum is more focus on discussion of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) database-driven web app. Non-AJAX based web-app as long as using the open source technology is also being discussed here.

I started AjaxApp.com on 18/Aug/2005 when I was running an open source web development training for JPKN .

The creation of AjaxApp.com basically is to initiate a forum site for the discussion of using open source, which the main focus is on PHP, J2EE + AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) + DHTML for developing interactive web-based applications.
